Charleston, South Carolina: Poogan’s Porch
So far this blog has been heavily focused on European cities…
But there are many places around right in the United States that are must see (and
must eat) spots worth mentioning. In honor of the notoriously spooky holiday of
Halloween just passing, I feel it’s a good time to mention a delicious—but haunted—restaurant
in Charleston, South Carolina. I visited Charleston for the first time this
August and immediately fell in love with the city. It is an adorably quaint
town full of classic southern architecture, boutique shopping, and of course…
food.
My friends and I are foodies, so whenever we go to a new
city we want to make sure we are hitting the best restaurants. We came across
Poogan’s Porch as a top place for brunch. It is an adorable restaurant located
in what used to be a house. They have tables outside, as there is a
double-decker porch, and they also have tables throughout the different rooms
of the home. The food was exceptional and the service was great, but what made
this restaurant visit different than most delectable brunches is that the home
is apparently haunted! Knowing this made our walk around up the creaky stairs
to our table that much spookier and more exciting. The walls are lined with
antique photos, surely to ignite anyone’s dark curiosities. I am not typically
one who loves to explore the sites of the paranormal, nor do I really believe
in ghosts, but the haunted house added a fun and mysterious element to our
otherwise traditional brunch.
After this, I found a list of other restaurants or tourist
locations that boast the existence of paranormal activity and therefore draw
ghost-hunters from all over. What places have you been that have been haunted? Dining
with ghosts isn’t too bad after all and after my experience at Poogan’s Porch
so much I am definitely interested in exploring other similar restaurants
around the country…
I loved this post! I love brunch and scary stories, so I will definitely be going here the next time I visit Charleston. I'm sure there are a lot of similar restaurants in Savannah, GA. I remember going on a tour of haunted places there when I was a little kid. I'm not sure if I believe in ghosts either but its always fun to pretend.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds awesome! I love taking trips, even if it means that it's just a few hours from Athens because each place has so many unique things to offer. This definitely sounds like one of them, and I thought of Savannah as I was reading through it. I haven't been to Charleston yet, but if/when I do go, this sounds like a great place to check out!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool restaurant! I love Charleston, it's such a pretty city. This whole haunted theme kind of reminds me of Savannah, GA. It is known for its haunted buildings and locations. I don't believe in ghosts either, but one year when my family was down there we went on a ghost tour. It was really cool hearing the stories of why certain places were haunted. This kind of reminds me of your restaurant experience. So fun!
ReplyDeleteI love Charleston too! I went there for spring break a few years ago. I didn't eat at Poogan's Porch, but found some other must visit restaurants. Acme Lowcountry Kitchen is top of my list. It's kind of a hole in the wall restaurant, but boy, does it have some delicious food. They have pimento cheese grits worth dying for! Next time I'm in Charleston I'll have to check out Poogan's. I'm always down to hear some good ghost stories!

ReplyDeleteI'm literally headed to Charleston this weekend and have reservations here, crazy! I'm a foodie as well and always try and pick the best places especially when I'm travelling. I hadn't heard anything about this place being haunted but this makes me even more excited. Your rave review affirmed my hopes for this restaurant, so thank you for that!

ReplyDeleteI love Charleston because it is the perfect spot for foodies. They have so many hole-in-the-wall places that are a great finds. I definitely want to try this place out next time I am in town!
ReplyDeleteOmg Charleston is one of my all time FAVORITE places!!! Their food is top 5 of all the places I have ever visited by far. I recently went there about a week ago and my top 3 recommendations for restaurants would be Fuel, 167 Raw, and Leon's Oyster Shop. Charleston is the ultimate escape from anywhere and I am truly OBSESSED! I loved your post and agree with everything you said!
