Barcelona, Spain: Bunkers del Carmel
Ingredients for a perfect evening: cold bottle of cava, freshly baked bread, deliciously soft brie, a setting sun and unbelievable 360 degree views of Barcelona from one of the city’s highest spots. After studying abroad in Barcelona for a semester, I quickly discovered that not only are the Bunkers my favorite spot in the city, but easily my favorite in the entire world.
You won’t be able to find this destination in any of the guidebooks, as it is not a formal “site” like La Sagrada Familia or La Boqueria. The way you hear about this location is from locals you meet around the town or others who have ventured up before you-- and I do not use the word “venture” lightly... As you can expect to some of the most spectacular views of this famous city, there is inevitably a trek to get there. The Metro and even cabs can only take you so far. Once you climb to the top of the sidewalk, there are steps sneakily placed on the side of a steep lawn. From there, you can follow the path created by those like you who crave this incredible experience overseeing all of Barcelona.
Once you reach the top, you will find run-down concrete structures that people perch up on to enjoy the scenery. The first time I stepped up to the highest point I was in complete awe. The golden atmosphere from the setting sun, coupled with the 360-degree views of this culturally stunning city were seemingly unreal. Then, as the sun goes down, you can watch Barcelona light up in the night right in front of you. The amazement I felt at this spot the few times I went up last spring is something I likely will not feel again until I return and for that reason I can’t wait to book a trip back!
